Is my package subject to taxes and duty?

While our shipping rates include all shipping and handling costs, you are responsible for all associated costs such as duties and/or taxes incurred. For more information, we advise that you contact your local customs office.

Can I pay the customs duty before I send my package?

All items sent via Take and Ship are DDU, which means the duty is unpaid. Any customs fees will need to be paid by the recipient. It is essential to provide local contact information so the recipient can be contacted by customs.

How will the import tax or customs duties be calculated?

There are not always import taxes and / or customs duties. It always depends on the type of goods and the import conditions of your country, some goods are exempted from customs duties.

An applicable import tax or turnover tax on imports is calculated from the customs value. It is a percentage of the value of the goods including shipping costs. For more information please contact your local customs office.

What if I received the item for free or as a gift?

Regardless of how you received the item, you must declare its value. There is no way to avoid customs duties, customs officers will check all items entering the country and charges will be applied where necessary.

If you simply put gift on the customs invoice, this does not mean it will not attract duty as they will still check the value of what is in the box.

Why must I fill customs declaration form include item prices and descriptions?
Take and Ship must provide an itemized shipping invoice to the customs agent in order to forward your items to you. The item details you enter when making a shipping request will automatically be transferred to this invoice.
In order to expedite your shipping requests, please be sure the item details (including prices and descriptions) you include with your request match the details of your purchases exactly.
If the details do not match, there may be a delay in the processing of your request, or your shipment may be delayed at the customs office of the importing country.

GENERAL IMPORT GUIDELINES
Goods that are subject to customs duty

Most goods are free of customs duty. Put simply, customs duty apply only to textiles (e.g. clothing) and foodstuffs (food and drink). If duty is to be paid on the goods, this must be paid upon import. Customs duty rates may vary for foodstuffs during the year. The customs duty rate for clothing depends on several factors. You must know the commodity code in the Customs Tariff in order to find out the customs duty rate – this will tell you how the individual item is classified.

VAT

You will generally report or pay VAT on all goods you import into Norway, even if you do not pay customs duty on the goods.

The Norwegian government sets the rate of VAT each year. VAT is currently 25 per cent. One exception is foodstuffs, for which the rate is 15 per cent.

Be aware that duties and any excise duties that must be paid for customs clearance are also included in the VAT calculation.

As of 1 January the NOK 350 value limit was abolished for

  • food and drinks (for example snacks, chocolate, soft drinks, supplements and vitamins),
  • goods with restrictions (for example medicines, seeds, plants and animal food)
  • goods with excise duties (for example alcohol, smear oil and climate gasses)

Other goods are until further notice, and as long as the Ministry of Finance decides, free from duties and taxes provided the shipments’ value including freight is under NOK 350. This applies for instance to clothes, electronics, cosmetics, makeup, sports equipment, glasses, kitchen equipment and furniture.
