Turkey has increased import taxes

Turkey has increased import taxes and introduced new regulations impacting overseas fast cargo shopping and import taxes. These changes, set to take effect in the coming days, aim to manage the influx of foreign goods and protect local industries. Reduced Shopping Limits

One of the most notable changes is the reduction of the overseas fast cargo shopping limit from 150 euros to just 30 euros. This drastic change aims to curb the volume of small, non-commercial shipments entering the country without stringent customs oversight.

Increased Import Taxes

Alongside the reduced shopping limit, Turkey has significantly increased import taxes on goods delivered via postal or fast cargo services. The new tax rates are as follows:

• 30% for Items from EU Countries: Previously, the tax rate for products from the EU was 18%. The new rate represents a 66% increase.
• 60% for Items from Other Countries: The tax rate for non-EU products has doubled from 30% to 60%.
• Additional 20% Tax: Items listed in (IV) of the Special Consumption Tax Law No. 4760 will incur an extra 20% tax on top of the above rates.

These increased tax rates will significantly impact the cost of imported goods, making them much more expensive for Turkish consumers.

Procedures for Purchases Exceeding 30 Euros

For items exceeding the new 30-euro limit but not exceeding 1500 euros and not in commercial quantities, the following procedures must be followed:

Customs Procedures and Declarations: Complete all necessary customs procedures and declarations to ensure compliance with Turkish law.
Indirect Representation by Fast Cargo Companies: Fast cargo companies that meet the conditions set by the Trade Ministry can be authorized as indirect representatives, simplifying the customs process for consumers.

The regulation will come into effect as of August 21, 2024.
